How It Works

Rock to Gravel in Four Steps

The THOR stone crusher mulcher uses a high-inertia rotor with carbide-tipped hammers to fracture and reduce stones in a single tractor pass — no pre-screening, no secondary crushing required.

1
Rotor Impact Fracture

The high-inertia rotor spins at working speed. Carbide-tipped hammers strike rocks at high velocity, fracturing them through impact. Rocks up to 400 mm diameter are reduced in the first contact.

2
Secondary Reduction Chamber

Fractured fragments pass through the reduction chamber where they strike anvils and deflector plates repeatedly — each impact reducing fragment size further until pieces pass through the sizing grid.

3
Sizing Grid Discharge

A fixed sizing grid at the rear of the machine controls the maximum fragment size discharged. Only material below the grid opening size exits — oversize fragments recirculate for further reduction.

4
Gravel Windrow

Reduced material is discharged as a gravel windrow behind the machine — ready for spreading as sub-base fill, road base, drainage material, or incorporated directly into the soil profile.

Applications

石破砕機 粉砕機 Applications

The THOR stone crusher mulcher handles every rocky land challenge — from agricultural field preparation to construction site clearance and road base production.

Stone crusher mulcher agricultural field clearing rocky soil
Agriculture
Rocky Field Preparation

Converts rock-strewn fields into cultivable land in one pass. Removes the surface rock layer blocking tillage equipment, reduces to gravel-sized material that drains freely and no longer damages machinery.

Land Clearing
Construction Site Clearance

Eliminates the cost of rock excavation and off-site disposal. The THOR reduces surface rock in-place to compactable fill — immediately usable as sub-base or spread as drainage material on site.

Road Building
In-Situ Road Base Production

Crushes rock in-place to produce road base material without quarrying or importing aggregate. Particularly effective for rural road construction in rocky terrain where aggregate cartage costs are prohibitive.

Vineyard & Orchard Preparation

Prepares rocky hillside terrain for vine and orchard planting without removing the mineral-rich rocky soil. Reduces surface rock to a workable layer while retaining the drainage characteristics that premium vineyards require.

Concrete & Masonry Debris Reduction

Reduces broken concrete slabs, masonry blocks, and mixed demolition debris to recyclable aggregate in-place. Eliminates skip hire and landfill costs — demolished material becomes on-site fill or base material.

Quarry Access & Perimeter Clearance

Clears quarry access roads and perimeter areas of loose rock and overburden. The THOR 3.0 handles the high-volume output demands of quarry operations, producing consistent gravel-sized material suitable for haul road maintenance.

Rock Suitability

Which Rocks Can the THOR Crush?

The THOR stone crusher mulcher is optimised for surface rock and shallow buried rock up to 400 mm diameter. Rock type and hardness determine the appropriate model and working speed.

🪨
Limestone & Calcareous Rock
素晴らしい

The THOR's ideal material. Limestone fractures cleanly under impact, produces consistent gravel-sized fragments, and causes minimal hammer wear. Standard working speed of 3 km/h.

🏔️
Sandstone & Sedimentary Rock
素晴らしい

Soft to medium sedimentary rock crushes easily. Sandstone, shale, and mudstone produce fine material that blends well into the soil profile — ideal for agricultural land reclamation.

⛰️
Basalt & Volcanic Rock
Good — reduced speed

Hard basalt and volcanic rock can be crushed but requires reduced working speed (1.5–2 km/h) and increases hammer wear rate. Recommend THOR 3.0 for high-volume basalt operations.

💎
Granite & Hard Igneous Rock
Suitable — check hardness

Weathered granite is suitable at reduced speed. Fresh unweathered granite above 200 MPa UCS may exceed the THOR's design envelope — contact us for a site assessment before ordering.

🏗️
Concrete & Masonry
素晴らしい

Unreinforced concrete and masonry crush efficiently. For reinforced concrete slabs, remove rebar before processing — steel reinforcement wraps around the rotor and requires manual clearing.

🪵
Mixed Rock & Stumps
素晴らしい

The THOR simultaneously handles rock, root stumps, and woody debris in a single pass — common in land-clearing operations where rock outcrops are mixed with tree stumps and brushwood.

FAQ

Stone Crusher Mulcher — Common Questions

Questions we receive most often before purchasing a THOR stone crusher mulcher.

What is the maximum rock size the THOR stone crusher can handle?
The THOR stone crusher mulcher is designed for surface rocks and shallow buried rocks up to 400 mm in diameter. Rocks larger than 400 mm should be pre-broken — either by a breaker attachment or manual splitting — before the THOR processes them. Operating at reduced speed (1.5–2 km/h instead of 3 km/h) allows the machine to handle larger rocks in the 350–400 mm range more effectively.
Do I need 180 cv exactly, or will a slightly lower-powered tractor work?
180 cv is the minimum for continuous operation in moderately rocky conditions. A tractor with 160 cv can run the THOR 2.4 at reduced speed or in lighter conditions, but will stall or overload on dense rocky ground. We recommend 10–15% headroom above the minimum — a 200 cv tractor on the THOR 2.4 is a comfortable working combination. For the THOR 3.0, 250+ cv is the practical working recommendation despite the 230 cv minimum specification.
What is the Kit Drawbar option and when do I need it?
The Kit Drawbar converts the THOR from a three-point hitch mounted machine to a trailed configuration. This is useful when the total rear weight of the stone crusher exceeds your tractor's rear axle load rating, or when you need to transport the machine on public roads without rear overhang restrictions. The drawbar configuration also improves stability on steep slopes by moving the machine's weight onto its own axle rather than cantilevering from the tractor's hitch.
How often do the carbide hammer tips need replacing?
Hammer tip life depends heavily on rock type. In limestone and soft sedimentary rock, hammer tips typically last 200–400 operating hours. In hard basalt or granite, this drops to 80–150 hours. The carbide tips are self-sharpening during operation — the tungsten carbide core remains sharp as the surrounding steel body wears. Replacement is straightforward: worn hammers are unbolted from the rotor drum and replaced without specialist tooling. We supply replacement hammer sets as spare parts.
Can the THOR stone crusher work on sloped terrain?
Yes — the THOR is widely used on hillside terrain, particularly in vineyard preparation. In hitch-mounted configuration, slopes up to 25–30% (14–17°) are workable depending on tractor stability. For steeper slopes, the Kit Drawbar configuration improves safety by distributing machine weight more evenly. Always work across slopes rather than up and down when possible, and ensure your tractor meets the minimum stability requirements for the gradient. Contact us for specific slope-working guidance for your terrain.
What size gravel does the THOR produce and can it be specified?
The THOR produces gravel-sized fragments typically in the 20–80 mm range, with the distribution depending on rock type and rotor speed. The sizing grid at the rear of the machine sets the maximum fragment size that exits — standard grids produce material suitable for road base and fill. Alternative grid sizes can be specified at order to produce coarser or finer output. Contact us with your target grading requirement and we can advise on the appropriate grid specification.
