How It Works

Cultivation and Fertilization in One Pass

The ERA series combines two operations that are normally done separately — inter-row cultivation and fertilizer application — into a single tractor pass. The PTO-driven rotor tines loosen the inter-row soil while the gravity-fed bunkers simultaneously apply granular fertilizer into each row.

PTO-Driven Rotor Cultivation

The PTO shaft at 540 RPM drives the rotor tines through the inter-row soil at 3–5 km/h forward speed. The tines penetrate to the set cultivation depth, fragmenting surface crust, incorporating crop residue, aerating the root zone, and cutting weed root systems below the soil surface. Spring-loaded furrowers follow ground contour for consistent depth on uneven terrain.

Simultaneous Fertilizer Application

While the rotor tines cultivate, the individual row bunkers meter granular fertilizer through delivery tubes directly into the cultivated zone. Fertilizer is placed at root zone depth in the freshly loosened soil — immediately available to the developing crop. The cultivation action incorporates the fertilizer into the soil rather than leaving it on the surface.

Soil Closure and Ridging

Following the rotor and fertilizer delivery zone, ridging elements reform the potato ridge profile — maintaining the raised bed geometry that promotes tuber development and drainage. The freshly cultivated and fertilized soil is returned to the ridge profile in a single pass, leaving the field ready for the next growth stage without additional passes.

Questions we receive most often before purchasing an ERA series rotary cultivator.

When should I use the ERA cultivator during the potato growing season?
The ERA cultivator is typically used 3–4 weeks after planting — when potato shoots have emerged to 100–150 mm height but before the canopy closes over the inter-row zone. This timing targets weed seedlings while they are small and easily controlled, and applies top-dress nitrogen and potassium at the period of maximum crop uptake demand. A second pass 6–8 weeks after planting may be beneficial on high-weed-pressure fields. Do not cultivate when the potato plant is at full canopy — the tines will damage surface roots and foliage.
Does the ERA cultivator replace the need for a separate fertilizer spreader pass?
Yes — for in-season top-dress fertilizer application, the ERA cultivator replaces a separate spreader pass entirely. The bunker system applies 125 kg/row per cultivation pass — sufficient for a single top-dress application on most potato crops. However, the ERA's 125 kg/row bunker capacity is smaller than the ADB series (350 kg/row), so it is not recommended as a substitute for the ADB-380/480 basal fertilizer application at planting time. The ERA is optimised for top-dress application during cultivation; the ADB series is optimised for high-volume basal application at or near planting.
How does the spring furrower differ from a standard rigid tine?
Spring furrowers deflect upward when they encounter a buried stone or hard object, then return to the set working depth after passing the obstacle — without stalling the machine or requiring the operator to stop and clear the blockage. Rigid tines cannot deflect: they either break, damage the machine, or stall the tractor when they hit a buried stone. For potato fields where stone removal (rock rake + rock picker) has been carried out before planting, rigid tines may be adequate — but in fields with any residual stone content, spring furrowers are strongly recommended to protect the machine and maintain consistent working depth throughout the field.
Can I use the ERA-3100 if I have a 2-row or 4-row potato planting system?
The ERA cultivator should match your planting row count for optimal efficiency. Using a 3-row cultivator on a 2-row planted field means one furrower runs over unplanted soil on every pass — wasting a third of the cultivation capacity and applying fertilizer between planted rows rather than within them. The same applies if you use the ERA-3100 on a 4-row planted field — one row per two passes will be skipped. Specify the ERA model that matches your planting system row count. If you are transitioning between row counts, the ERA model should be selected for the new configuration, not the old one.
