In-Row Fertilizer Placement in Three Steps

The ADB series applies granular fertilizer directly into the root zone of each potato row in a single pass — no broadcast spreading, no incorporation step, no surface loss. Precision placement delivers fertilizer exactly where the developing tubers can absorb it.

Gravity-Fed Bunker Metering

Granular fertilizer in each individual row bunker feeds by gravity through an adjustable metering gate. The gate opening is set before the field operation to control the application rate in kg/ha. Each row bunker meters independently — if one row runs empty, the other rows continue applying at the correct rate.

In-Furrow Placement

Fertilizer drops through delivery tubes directly into each furrow at the root zone depth — typically 80–120 mm below the soil surface. Placement at root zone depth rather than surface broadcasting eliminates surface runoff loss, reduces volatilisation, and delivers fertilizer at the point of maximum uptake efficiency for developing tubers.

Soil Coverage

Following discs or ridge-forming elements cover the fertilizer deposit with soil after placement — protecting it from rainfall wash-off, surface evaporation, and UV degradation. Coverage also prevents seed potato placed in the same furrow from direct contact with concentrated fertilizer granules, which can cause fertilizer burn on germinating seed.

What fertilizer types are compatible with the ADB-380 and ADB-480?
The ADB series is designed for dry granular fertilizers — NPK compounds, single superphosphate (SSP), muriate of potash (MOP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), and urea prills. Particle size should be uniform granular (2–5 mm) for consistent metering. Fine powder fertilizers, hygroscopic products that clump in humidity, and liquid fertilizers are not compatible with the gravity-fed bunker metering system. Contact us with your specific fertilizer product for compatibility confirmation before purchasing.
How is the application rate adjusted?
Application rate is controlled by the metering gate opening on each individual row bunker. The gate is set before field operations using a calibration procedure: set the gate to the target opening, run the machine for a set distance (typically 100 m), collect and weigh the discharged material, and calculate the actual application rate in kg/ha. Adjust the gate opening up or down to reach the target rate. Calibration should be repeated whenever the fertilizer product is changed, as different granule sizes and densities discharge at different rates for the same gate opening.
Can the ADB series be used for basal fertilizer at planting, or only as top-dress?
The ADB series can be used for both basal fertilizer application (before or during planting) and as in-season top-dress fertilizer. For basal application, the fertilizer is applied into the open furrow before the seed potato is placed — the seed then sits on or above the fertilizer deposit. Ensure adequate soil coverage between the fertilizer and seed to prevent fertilizer burn on germinating seed (minimum 50 mm soil separation). For top-dressing, the machine applies fertilizer into the inter-row zone after crop emergence, typically 3–4 weeks after planting.
Should the row count match my potato planter?
Yes — the fertilizer spreader row count should match your planting and furrowing configuration. If you are using a 3-row Watanabe potato furrower (R-380) and a 3-row planter, use the ADB-380 (3-row). If you are using a 4-row system, use the ADB-480. Mismatched row counts mean either some rows receive fertilizer twice (overlapping passes) or some rows are skipped — both reduce crop uniformity and waste fertilizer. Row spacing should also match — specify your target row spacing when ordering so the machine is configured to your inter-row distance.
